When you describe a setting you should be as specific as possible. Note that Katie doesnât just describe a place, she describes it at a particular time of day. The mood of a place is connected to the time of day: this place would feel much less eerie at noon, for example. In the same way Tim Pifer, a sixth grader, evokes a certain late-afternoon-in-winter feeling in this poem:
Winter
Crystals falling from the sky,
Kids playing on the crisp snow,
The plain trees standing as straight as statues,
The snow as bright as a fresh-bleached shirt,
Our shadows are beating us to the spot.
The shadows as black as the pit that never ends;
We have to tremble home and stand by the bright fire
to warm our red cold bodies.
